Cheers Luke ! We really appreciate your review. We're trying to give kids a way to be challenged in a controlled environment and get them to "look beyond their personal comfort envelope". Like many parents, we feel there's just too much bubble wrap out there nowadays. Every child is different and we don't want to "overcook "the challenge factor...So it's a tricky balance tailoring the presentation to individual families. The good news is that with the parents supporting, this becomes a growth experience ... "feeling a sense of uncertainty but taking on the challenge anyway". Great team building for the whole family !
Engaged our senses and imaginations from the moment we knocked 3 times at the door. Our 9 year old felt like she was a character is a great adventure story. Peter who introduced us to the Troll Cave was very engaging and set the scene well. Our 5 year found the cave itself a bit scary but enjoyed the start and end of the tour especially meeting the eel. Lots of fun for the adults too.
Thanks so much Juanita! You were a fun group to have visit and our Troll "Tom" send s you his finest regards :)
Starting at the beginning with a lovely, child friendly welcome at reception, the Waitomo Troll Cave experience is really a thrilling, fun and interactive adventure for the kids. Once venturing off to the cave itself, the scares started early before the children even got inside (mild, but fun!!) Peter really makes this whole experience - his story telling, his interaction with the kids, the mild adult humour, Peter is clearly someone who is both passionate and loves what he does. The experience itself was better for our 10 and 13 year old (just the scary parts...) however, the 5, 7 and 8 year old raved about it the entire way home and nearing the end. Easily the best escape room experience we have taken our children through and us 3 adults loved it just as much. The water, the lights, the tunnels within the cave are awesomely believable for the children and the whole thing is certainly a value for money experience. All happy girls on the drive home already asking for their next visit. Thanks so much Waitomo caves and especially, Troll Cave team!
Thanks so much Teeshe1 ! Your family was so much fun to take on this adventure. The cool thing was that the kids really bought into the experience. Their lucid imaginations along with supportive parents enabled them to get the most out of the experience. Well done to all !
Amazing experience. So much fun and big effort from Peter the guide for such an affordable price. His enthusiasm and fun made the experience so much more enjoyable. Kids loved it, as did we.
Thanks very much Tim for your thoughtful review - which is much appreciated :) The price is for up to eight participants and we try to keep this cost affordable for families. However the main thing is that, at least for a while, we want to take people into a very different world, where the rules are a bit different and anything can happen - a real adventure !
This is not your usual escape room. I brought the family here expecting to be put in a cave and have to find our way out- usual Escape room experience. This however is quite different with a lot of story telling and creeping through tunnels in the dark. We all enjoyed it and thought Peter did a great job at engaging everyone. Our only suggestion would be to modify the first section and cut it down to about 30mins rather than 60mins for older groups. We thought it was probably aimed more at young kids. Lots of fun and a unique end to our Waitomo adventures
Thanks very much for your thoughtful feedback ! You're right - this is no ordinary Escape Room. We're already working on an adult version that should be more along the lines you're thinking :)

Troll-tastic
Our two boys really enjoyed their time in the troll cave. They were 6 and 4, and were definitely challenged by some parts of it, but the guide is able to change the scary factor according to the group. They both keep talking about it and right now are working on a map of our house for our own house troll. The imagination factoring the Troll Cave is really high with lots of back story and details about trolls. I think it’s really unique for kids to experience such an immersive imaginative space with adults being part of the fantasy. I would recommend to all kids who have an interest in things that are a little bit spooky.
