Experience all that Rotorua has to offer, from its brilliant volcanic activity, natural wonders, and gorgeous landscapes. Make this day trip your own with a choice of afternoon activities and enjoy exploring at your own pace.

Departing Auckland, we set out on a 2.5-hour scenic drive to Rotorua. We then take the journey on foot through the astounding Waimangu Volcanic Valley, full of volcanic activity including hot springs, steam vents and geysers. Learn about the history of the region while being captivated with a stunning view of Mt Tarawera beyond lake Rotomahana. Once you’ve had your fill of the astonishing views, take the bus back up to the valley and enjoy lunch at Waimangu Café at your own expense.

You can then choose how to spend your afternoon with one of the options below (at your own expense):

Option 1. Enjoy a self-guided tour of Wai-O-Tapu (Māori for “sacred waters”) an active geothermal wonderland full of steaming pools with stunning colours, intricate landscapes and the breath-taking Lady Knox geyser.

Option 2. Relax and replenish at the Polynesian Spa, soaking in the geothermal hot springs or enjoying the family-friendly pools.

Option 3. Explore Te Puia, home to rich Māori culture, including traditional architecture, and home to Pōhuthu, the largest geyser in the southern hemisphere.

Once you’re famished and finally ready to put your feet up, we recommend heading to Eat Street on Tutanekai Street, where you’ll find an array of quality restaurants, cafés and bars to enjoy dinner before returning to Auckland.
